RIIWHS403E Apply the work health and safety management system overview

This course describes the skills and knowledge required to apply and monitor the work health and safety management system, also known as the Safety and Health Management System for the mine site.  This includes understanding your legal responsibilities and obligations as a supervisor.  The unit focus is on sub-components of the WHS management system, including health and hygiene, emergency procedure planning and preparation, risk management (including site hazards – hazardous substances, dust, noise, vibrations, work processes, plant and equipment) and addressing the availability of resources in deciding on and implementing risk controls.  In addition to the above focus, the unit details methods for workplace inspections and observation and the importance of demonstrating visual leadership.

Candidates undertaking RIIWHS403E are people who work in supervisory positions but are also Senior and/or Statutory position holders in the management structure for the mine.  These position holders are required to supervise others in the workplace.

Below are the key entry requirements for enrolling in RIIWHS403E Apply the work health and safety management system:

  • Practical Experience
Demonstrated experience assessing risk in the workplace and regulatory obligations in a mining environment.
  • Access to Mining Site and Systems
Participants must have current access to the mine’s Safety and Health Management System for on-the-job application of learning.

This course is specifically designed for Supervisors, Open Cut Examiners or people moving into these roles. These people are responsible for the quality and quantity of the work they perform and oversee others by providing instruction and supervision to those involved in applying the work health and safety management system (Safety and Health Management System) for the mine site.

  • Enhanced Knowledge of WHS Management: Gain a comprehensive understanding of the Work Health and Safety (WHS) or Safety and Health Management System specific to mine sites, enabling effective application and monitoring.
  • Legal Compliance: Understand your legal responsibilities and obligations as a supervisor helping to ensure the mine site complies with relevant WHS legislation and regulations.
  • Workplace Inspection and Observation: Acquire methods for conducting effective workplace inspections and observations, fostering proactive hazard identification and control.
  • Promoting a Safety Culture: Contribute to creating a safer workplace environment by leading by example and actively managing WHS responsibilities.

Applying and monitoring the work health safety management systems (Safety and Health Management System) at the mine site includes various critical tasks to ensure the different types of work activities are conducted safely and supervised effectively.   For critical tasks, the SSE must ensure that persons have the technical competencies to undertake that task (Coal Mining Safety and Health Act s42 (i) (ii)).   The SSE must ensure that the person is competent for the task assigned.  People undertaking this course are typically working supervisors.

At Mine Training Solutions, workplace-based learning is designed to integrate seamlessly with your daily operations, ensuring that training enhances rather than disrupts your workflow.  Our workplace base approach allows participants to apply, implement and maintain the company-specific safety and health management system in real-time, fostering immediate practical understanding and reinforcing learning through actual job tasks.

Training schedules can accommodate shift work and different team schedules, allowing all relevant personnel to participate without impacting productivity. The workplace activities that candidates engage in directly contribute to the application and implementation of the company’s Safety and Health Management System (SHMS). This approach provides positive outcomes not only for the candidates, enhancing their skills and knowledge, but also for the business, fostering a safer work environment and improving overall operational efficiency.

Learning in the workplace promotes collaboration and knowledge sharing among team members, strengthening your organisation’s safety culture and operational resilience. By choosing workplace-based training with Mine Training Solutions, you ensure that your team gains relevant, actionable skills that directly contribute to a safer and more efficient mining operation.

The Mine Training Solutions workplace activities will require third parties—such as senior and statutory position holders (content experts/mentors)—to verify practical skill demonstrations for specific activities and provide feedback based on their observations of the candidate performing these tasks.

Feedback from third parties is a vital component of our assessment process. These ‘Third Parties’ are experienced individuals competent in the tasks candidates are asked to perform. They provide mentoring, guidance, and constructive feedback. The involvement of third parties promotes effective communication and consultation within the mining industry, which is fundamental for the application, implementation, and ongoing maintenance of the mine’s Safety and Health Management System.

In addition:

  • Engaging experienced mentors encourages open dialogue and interaction among candidates, mentors, and trainers, thereby creating a cohesive learning environment.
  • Incorporating third-party insights fosters a culture of consultation, ensuring that safety practices and operational procedures are shared and understood across all levels of the workforce.
  • By aligning practical skill development with feedback from experienced mentors, candidates are better equipped to understand and adhere to safety and health standards, ultimately promoting a safer working environment.

The integration of third parties into the training and assessment framework at Mine Training Solutions is essential for delivering high-quality vocational training. Their role not only aids in verifying candidate’s skills but also emphasises the importance of communication, safety, and continuous improvement within the mining sector.

This is a self-paced program that can typically be completed over 2-3 days (excluding reading and research time). However, participants have a total enrolment period of 8 weeks to accommodate shift work and other commitments. Extensions are available upon request.
