RIIENV401E Supervise dust and noise control overview

The course focus is on the importance of supervising dust and noise control in the resources and infrastructure industries.  This focus includes interpreting and applying documentation required to supervise dust and noise control as well as planning and implementing control measures, work practices and monitoring processes.  Candidates undertaking training in this course will gain an understanding of the training needs of individuals, rectify and report actual/potential dust and noise problems promptly, decisively and make recommendation for improvements.

Candidates undertaking this course are typically experienced mine workers at supervisory level.  Candidates may also be Senior or Statutory position holders in the management structure for the mine who are responsible for dust and noise control in the workplace.

Below are the key entry requirements for enrolling in RIIENV401E Supervisor dust and noise control:

  • Practical Experience
Demonstrated experience assessing risk in the workplace and regulatory obligations in a mining environment.
  • Access to Mining Site and Systems
Participants must have current access to the mine’s Safety and Health Management System for on-the-job application of learning.

This course is specifically designed for Supervisors, Open Cut Examiners, Safety and Health Advisors, or individuals transitioning into these roles. These professionals are responsible for managing the quality and quantity of their work, as well as overseeing others by providing instruction and supervision related to the application of the Safety and Health Management System, with a particular focus on dust and noise control at the mine site.

Effective supervision of dust and noise control offers numerous advantages, including improved health and safety for workers, compliance with industry regulations, reduced environmental impact, and enhanced community relations. By mastering these skills, supervisors help create safer, cleaner, and more sustainable work environments.

  • Develop the ability to effectively oversee dust and noise control measures, ensuring compliance with legal and company requirements.
  • Gain knowledge of the Safety and Health Management System (SHMS) related to dust and noise control and learn how to apply it in daily operations to protect workers’ health.
  • Learn to interpret and implement the requirements of the Coal Mining Safety and Health Regulations 2017, specifically Regulations 89 and 91.
  • Improve skills in identifying actual and potential dust and noise hazards and implementing appropriate control measures promptly.
  • Strengthen supervisory leadership by providing clear instructions, overseeing work quality and quantity, and fostering a safety-focused work environment.
  • Build confidence to make informed decisions regarding dust and noise control, report issues effectively, and recommend improvements.

Supervising dust and noise control involves applying and monitoring the safety and health management system (SHMS) at the mine site in accordance with the company-specific PHMP for Airborne Dust or any other airborne contaminants, the Hazard Management Plan for Dust (as required Coal Mining Safety and Health Regulations 2017 – regulation 89) and Hazard Management Plan for Noise (as required Coal Mining Safety and Health Regulations 2017 – regulation 91).

Candidates undertaking training in this course are working at supervisory level or above.  These people are responsible for the quality and quantity of the work they perform and oversee others by providing instruction and supervision to those involved in mining activities.  This type of candidate works at Supervisory Level – is a hands-on person and is required to access, share plan and implemented company-specific site requirements.

This approach provides positive outcomes not only for the candidates, enhancing their skills and knowledge, but also for the business, fostering a safer work environment and improving overall operational efficiency.

Learning in the workplace promotes collaboration and knowledge sharing among team members, strengthening your organisation’s safety culture and operational resilience. By choosing workplace-based training with Mine Training Solutions, you ensure that your team gains relevant, actionable skills that directly contribute to a safer and more efficient mining operation.

The Mine Training Solutions workplace activities will require third parties—such as senior and statutory position holders (content experts/mentors)—to verify practical skill demonstrations for specific activities and provide feedback based on their observations of the candidate performing these tasks.

Feedback from third parties is a vital component of our assessment process. These ‘Third Parties’ are experienced individuals competent in the tasks candidates are asked to perform. They provide mentoring, guidance, and constructive feedback. The involvement of third parties promotes effective communication and consultation within the mining industry, which is fundamental for the application, implementation, and ongoing maintenance of the mine’s Safety and Health Management System.

In addition:

  • Engaging experienced mentors encourages open dialogue and interaction among candidates, mentors, and trainers, thereby creating a cohesive learning environment.
  • Incorporating third-party insights fosters a culture of consultation, ensuring that safety practices and operational procedures are shared and understood across all levels of the workforce.
  • By aligning practical skill development with feedback from experienced mentors, candidates are better equipped to understand and adhere to safety and health standards, ultimately promoting a safer working environment.

The integration of third parties into the training and assessment framework at Mine Training Solutions is essential for delivering high-quality vocational training. Their role not only aids in verifying candidate’s skills but also emphasises the importance of communication, safety, and continuous improvement within the mining sector.
