RIIRIS402E Carry out the risk management process (G2) overview

The G2 Risk Management course trains people working in mining and the wider resources and infrastructure sector to lead and facilitate the risk management process at their workplace. Participants learn to run risk assessments with work groups, identify hazards, analyse and rank risk, choose controls using the hierarchy of controls, and communicate, audit and report on the results.

The G2 is widely recognised across the industry as the standard risk facilitator qualification. Mine sites often require it for supervisors, deputies, open-cut examiners, team leaders and anyone else who leads risk assessments.

Enrolment Pathways and Fees

  • Training & Assessment: $375.00 (training and assessment)
  • Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL): $375.00 (for candidates with relevant industry experience who can provide evidence of skills & knowledge)
  • Refresher Training: $375.00 (for candidates who meet the refresher training criteria & hold a previous competency in RIIRIS402E or equivalent unit)

Below are the key Mine Training Solutions internal entry requirements for enrolling in this course:

  • Mining Industry Experience: Demonstrated experience working in the mining environment.
  • Access to Company-specific systems: Participants must have current access to the mine’s Safety and Health Management System for on-the-job application of learning.

The G2 Risk Management course is designed for people working at operational or coordinator level who lead or facilitate risk assessments, or who are planning to move into a supervisory role. These people are responsible for the quality and safety of the work they and their teams perform. They facilitate risk assessments with work groups, give instruction and supervision to people carrying out the risk management process, and make sure controls are put in place and communicated to everyone involved.

Completing the G2 Risk Management course offers many benefits, especially for emerging industry leaders.

  • Meet the industry-recognised competency requirement for facilitating risk assessments in coal mines as well as mineral mines and quarries.
  • Understand the risk management process and the site safety and health management system, so you can apply them confidently at work.
  • Learn to facilitate team-based risk assessments such as JSA, WRAC and bowtie, and keep crews involved and on track.
  • Identify hazards, rate risk with a risk matrix, and choose effective controls using the hierarchy of controls.
  • Gain the confidence to communicate risk, audit controls and recommend improvements that keep people safe.
  • Build the risk management skills needed for appointed roles such as Mining Supervisor, Open Cut Examiner and Deputy.

The G2 is the industry-recognised competency requirement for anyone facilitating risk assessments in the mining industry, in Queensland coal mines as well as mineral mines and quarries. For competency requirements by position, see Competencies and certificates for statutory positions.

The G2 training pathway (RIIRIS402E Carry out the risk management process) gives workers the skills to lead and facilitate risk assessments on mine sites. It is often completed after the G1, G8 and G9 (G189) mining supervisor units.

Roles that commonly require or benefit from the G2 include:

  • Mining Supervisor (Appointed)
  • Open Cut Examiners
  • Deputies and Mine Managers (coal)
  • Trade-qualified people moving into supervisory roles
  • Team leaders, safety and health representatives and HSE advisors who lead risk assessments.

The G2 Risk Management course prepares participants to lead and facilitate the risk management process with their work teams. Participants learn to apply workplace risk management procedures, identify hazards, analyse and rank risk, and choose and put in place controls using the hierarchy of controls. They also learn to recognise unacceptable risks and seek advice on them, communicate outcomes and controls to everyone involved, and audit and review results to improve effectiveness. By mastering these areas, participants will develop the skills and confidence to guide their teams through risk assessments, make sound safety decisions and meet site requirements, while keeping worker safety the top priority. This training aims to develop confident, proactive leaders committed to managing risk and to safety and operational excellence.

  • Understanding the risk management process and your obligations under workplace policies, procedures and legislation.
  • Planning and preparing for risk assessments, including scope, team selection and choosing the right tool.
  • Facilitating team-based risk assessments such as JSA, JHA, WRAC and bowtie.
  • Identifying hazards and analysing risk with a likelihood and consequence risk matrix.
  • Selecting and implementing controls using the hierarchy of controls to reduce unacceptable risk.
  • Seeking advice and clarifying findings for unacceptable risks.
  • Providing instruction and supervision to those involved in the risk management process.
  • Communicating outcomes, work procedures and control requirements to work groups.
  • Auditing outcomes and processes, and recommending improvements.
  • Preparing risk assessment documentation and reports.

Mine Training Solutions has implemented a robust and integrated system for managing student services, learning and assessment delivery.  The use of aXcelerate learning management system (LMS) has streamlined and optimised our educational operations.  Below is an overview of assessment methods utilised:

  • Online Written Responses
    • Knowledge questions to test theoretical understanding.
    • Case study or scenario-based tasks.
  • Workplace Activities
    • Practical projects and workplace activities utilising the company-specific SHMS.
    • Third-party reports or supervisor validation.

The workplace activities include the use of mine site Third-Parties (content experts) and/or Appointed Statutory Officials which may include Senior Persons and Supervisory Positions within the management structure of the mine.

Upon successful completion, you will receive a Statement of Attainment for…

  • RIIRIS402E Carry out the risk management process

This credential recognises that you have met the required competencies outlined by the nationally endorsed training package.

Credit Transfer refers to the formal recognition of units of competency or qualifications that you have previously achieved through any Registered Training Organisation (RTO) in Australia. If you have already completed a unit identical or equivalent you may be eligible to apply for a credit transfer. To do so, you’ll need to provide:

  • Valid Evidence – A statement of attainment or official transcript showing the unit code and title.
  • Proof of Equivalency – The unit must match or be recognised as equivalent to the one in the course, as determined by current training package rules.

If approved, you will not need to repeat training or assessment for that particular unit, potentially reducing your overall study load and completion timeframe. If you have any questions regarding the credit transfer process, our team will be happy to provide guidance and support.

Mine Training Solutions offers Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) pathways for all of our nationally recognised units of competency and qualifications. If you already have the skills, knowledge and workplace experience a unit of competency requires, you may be eligible to apply for RPL.

Each RPL assessment is designed around the requirements of the unit, so your existing skills and knowledge are assessed fairly and consistently against the relevant industry and training package requirements.

What’s included in an RPL Kit?

Each RPL Kit is developed specifically for its unit of competency and includes:

  1. RPL Application: Outline the qualifications, training and workplace experience relevant to the unit of competency you are applying for.
  2. Knowledge Questions: Demonstrate the underpinning knowledge the unit requires.
  3. Evidence Portfolio: Your RPL Kit lists the workplace documents and supporting evidence you need to show your competency. Simply source the evidence and upload it to our Learning Management System (LMS).
  4. Third-Party Report: Independent verification of your workplace performance from an appropriately qualified supervisor, manager or other authorised workplace representative.

Assessment Outcome

A Mine Training Solutions Appointed Assessor reviews your completed RPL submission. If clarification or more evidence is needed, you may be asked to take part in a Competency Conversation or provide further supporting documents before an assessment decision is made.  RPL does not automatically recognise previous employment, years of experience or past job roles. It is a formal assessment process that determines whether you can demonstrate the skills and knowledge the nationally recognised unit of competency requires.

Not sure if RPL is right for you?

Contact Mine Training Solutions to discuss your qualifications, training and workplace experience. We’ll help you decide whether RPL is the right assessment pathway or whether another training option would better suit your needs.

At Mine Training Solutions, workplace-based learning is designed to integrate seamlessly with your daily operations, ensuring that training enhances rather than disrupts your workflow.  Our workplace base approach allows participants to apply, implement and maintain the company-specific safety and health management system in real-time, fostering immediate practical understanding and reinforcing learning through actual job tasks.

Training schedules can accommodate shift work and different team schedules, allowing all relevant personnel to participate without impacting productivity. The workplace activities that candidates engage in directly contribute to the application and implementation of the company’s Safety and Health Management System (SHMS). This approach provides positive outcomes not only for the candidates, enhancing their skills and knowledge, but also for the business, fostering a safer work environment and improving overall operational efficiency.

Learning in the workplace promotes collaboration and knowledge sharing among team members, strengthening your organisation’s safety culture and operational resilience. By choosing workplace-based training with Mine Training Solutions, you ensure that your team gains relevant, actionable skills that directly contribute to a safer and more efficient mining operation.

The Mine Training Solutions workplace activities will require third parties (senior and statutory position holders (content experts/mentors) to verify practical skill demonstration for set activities and provide feedback on what was observed when the candidate performed the set work tasks.  Feedback from third parties is an important part of our assessment process.  Our ‘Third Parties’ are people who are competent in the task candidates are asked to carry out and provide mentoring, guidance and feedback.  The use of third parties promotes communication and consultation in the mining industry, which is fundamental for the application, implementation and maintenance of the mine’s Safety and Health Management System.

In addition:

  • Engaging experienced mentors encourages open dialogue and interaction among candidates, mentors, and trainers, thereby creating a cohesive learning environment.
  • Incorporating third-party insights fosters a culture of consultation, ensuring that safety practices and operational procedures are shared and understood across all levels of the workforce.
  • By aligning practical skill development with feedback from experienced mentors, candidates are better equipped to understand and adhere to safety and health standards, ultimately promoting a safer working environment.

The integration of third parties into the training and assessment framework at Mine Training Solutions is essential for delivering high-quality vocational training. Their role not only aids in verifying candidate’s skills but also emphasises the importance of communication, safety, and continuous improvement within the mining sector.

This is a self-paced program that can typically be completed over 2 days (excluding reading and research time). However, participants have a total enrolment period of 8 weeks to accommodate shift work and other commitments. Extensions are available upon request.
